The famous brake producer Brembo, announced on Friday it's signed an agreement to acquire Swedish suspension company Öhlins for $405 million.

Both companies are deeply entrenched in OEM, racing, and the aftermarket industries, but this acquisition brings Brembo places it hasn’t been before.

“We welcome Öhlins to our Group as a great opportunity to expand our offerings for the automotive market,” said Matteo Tiraboschi, Brembo's executive chairman. “With this addition, we take another step forward in our strategy to provide integrated intelligent solutions to our customers, leveraging synergies across key technologies in the vehicle's corner."

As of today, Öhlins builds shock absorbers, front forks, steering dampers, software and algorithms, and various accessories. Like Brembo, it has a strong foothold in a number of racing series. You can find Öhlins parts on vehicles in Formula 1, NASCAR, MotoGP, World Superbike, and more.

Brembo’s plans for Öhlins are unknown and filled with somewhat generic corporate jargon, but Brembo did call out Öhlins’ commitment to mechatronic suspension technology as a specific reason this acquisition makes sense and contributes to the trend of Brembo buying brands in the motorcycle and motor racing business such as Bybre, Breco, Marchesini, AP Racing, J.Juan, and SBS Friction.
